The right place, the right time, the right look...

Egypt, Cairo City - Mother & Child
This is one of several shots in a sequence. The other's sadly just alittle too blurry. The situation was thus:

Visiting the Museum, took time out at lunch to sit in the gardens on a wall under a tree in the shade. I was about 8ft away from the Mother, and at the beginning didn't realise there was a child behind her.

Anywho, slowly, the child started to peep in front of the mother to see what was going on. Not sure why, I wasn't exactly jumping up and down and screaming. But having my camera I could not resist what was unravelling in front of me, cute baby with BIG eyes.

The issue was of respect and politeness. It's not a done thing to really be going round pointing you're huge telephoto lens at woman and children, more so in Egypt. But equally did not want to pass this up. So I discreetly angled my camera up, but left it dangling down by my feet and snapped away.

Eventually, the kid got quite curious and more brazen until I got this photo. I think I might of been making funny faces at this point.

In the end the mother did look round and I felt obliged to actually show her the photos, not sure why, but she seemed to have a very friendly look, underneath all that headgear. So i gestured to the camera and she actually nodded her head, so I moved up closer to her and showed her the photos.

Fortunately I could tell she was very happy and not at all 'pissed'.

It remains one of my most precious photos.

Beautiful! If I took that shot and if she were my daughter, I'd drool all the way! She is just so sweet!

Graham, your work is fantastic and inspiring. I really like the stories that frequently accompany your work – they add so much to it and your perspective transcends the very moments you capture... clearly more than "just creative."

Sweet shot, nice little story and a great opportunity to cross a cultural gulf.
